Joshua York, ESE senior in Electrical Engineering, won the first place award for best overall presentation at the St. Louis Area Undergraduate Research Symposium (STLAURS) that took place on April 4th. There were a total of 45 presenters from four different universities: Washington University, St. Louis University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Joshua was selected to win the first place award, including a check of $500, after presenting his research on acoustic source localization using an array of microphones and generalized cross-correlation signal processing algorithms. This research was conducted as an Undergraduate Research Project under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Arye Nehorai, Patricio La Rosa and Ed Richter.

The American Undergraduate Research Society (AURS) presented the St. Louis Area Undergraduate Research Symposium (STLAURS), an annual event held each spring that allows hundreds of undergraduates from six outstanding St. Louis area universities the opportunity to present their research results in a professional setting.

STLAURS provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the research of their peers, speak to the attending university faculty, interact with industry representatives, and receive both wisdom and inspiration from the invited speakers. Members of the larger St. Louis and Midwest scientific research community are invited to attend. This unique event is a collaboration involving Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, St. Louis University, University of Missouri, University of Missouri at Rolla, Washington University in St. Louis, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and Webster University.
