“The David H. Levy Prize for the Outstanding Electrical Engineering Senior” is supported by an endowment established by David Levy’s grandfather, General Arnold S. Dane. General Dane had a high regard for his grandson’s education at Washington University School of Engineering. This prize is given annually beginning with the class of 1987.
“The Russell R. Pfeiffer Outstanding Junior Award“ is established under his name .
Russell R. Pfeiffer was chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering from 1971-1975.
He died in 1975.
Prof. Pfeiffer helped to establish the Sensory Biophysics Laboratory (SBL) in the Department of Physiology of the WU medical school. This laboratory investigated the functioning of the cochlea, the sensory organ of hearing. The primary contribution of SBL was promoting the now accepted notion that the cochlea is a non-linear and active system (as recently as the 1980s, the cochlea was considered by most to be a linear passive system). The laboratory was also unique in its emphasis on using the response of the auditory nerve as a non-invasive measure of the functioning of the cochlea.
“The Rick Grodsky ESE Award for Technical Achievement” is given in his memory. He was Assistant Dean and Registrar from 1999-2001. He was Professor of Electrical Engineering from 1990-1999. He received his bachelor’s (1965), master’s (1967) and doctoral (1971) degrees in Electrical Engineering from Washington University. This prize is given annually beginning with the class of 2003. (Rick passed away in 2002 at the age of 58 due to the complications of lung cancer. )
